BOE approves up to $1,200 bonuses

Employees in the Elbert County School District will receive an extra up to $1,200 after a unanimous approval from the Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) to use American Rescue Plan Act funds for the signing/retention bonuses during Monday night’s meeting.

Early deadlines set for Thanksgiving holiday, The Star office closed

The Elberton Star will have early deadlines for the Nov. 22 edition as the paper will print a day early due to Thanksgiving.
All news, advertising, legal and classified deadlines will be Friday, Nov. 18 at noon.

Jarvis to retire as superintendent

Elbert County School Superintendent Jon Jarvis will retire after 33 years with the Elbert County School District (ECSD).
Jarvis announced his retirement, effective June 30, during the Board of Education’s (BOE) Nov. 7 work session.

‘Seabee’ tallies 26,000 miles of service

Before he was 18 years old, Elberton’s Eugene “Gene” Wallace had never been aboard a ship.
By the month after his 19th birthday, he’d traveled over 26,000 miles, by ship and train, halfway across the world as a member of the United States Navy’s units of “Seabees” in World War II.

Man charged with DUI in fatal head-on collision

An Elberton man was charged with driving under the influence following a head-on collision at the intersection of Athens (State Route 72) and Bowman (State Route 17) highways Thursday, Nov. 3 that claimed the life of the second driver two days later.

Mixed Raider team finishes second in nation

The Elbert County Comprehensive High School Mixed Raider team finished tied for second in the nation at the Raider National Championships Nov. 5, bringing home national trophies for the first time in six years.

Veteran’s Day events to be held Friday

A pair of Veteran’s Day events will be observed throughout Elbert County Friday, Nov. 11.
From 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the Elbert County Comprehensive High School JROTC program will host their annual Veteran’s Day ceremony in the high school gym.
Those planning to attend should arrive at 8:15 a.m.
