County approves ARPA funding for nonprofits

After nearly two years after an initial request from the Elbert County Coalition of Nonprofits, the Elbert County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 Monday night to allocate a portion of the county’s American Rescue Plan Act funds to organizations within the group.

Grand jury hands down indictment for murder charges

An Elbert County grand jury handed down an indictment of Andrew Nicholas Berry for malice murder, felony murder and seven other charges after he was arrested and charged in the death of his girlfriend Dec. 31, 2022. The grand jury met for the January 2023 session Jan.

County vehicle takes down power pole in Bowman

A county solid waste vehicle brought down a power pole in Bowman Monday afternoon, causing a power outage in most of the city, according to Mayor Roberta Rice. Rice said power was restored to the area around 45 minutes to an hour following the accident.

County Administrator resigns

Elbert County Administrator Phil Pitts has resigned, effective following 15 days of owed vacation, after being pressured to leave by Commission Chairman Lee Vaughn and the belief a majority of commissioners would vote to fire him. Commissioners voted 3-1 Feb.

Carlton man charged with Jan. 27 murder

A Carlton man has been charged with malice murder following the death of an Elberton man Jan. 27, according to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO).
