Student charged following Monday shooting hoax

A 14-year-old Elbert County Comprehensive High School (ECCHS) student has been arrested and charged with a felony count of making false statements and a misdemeanor count of disruption of public schools following an active shooter hoax made Monday that forced Elbert County Schools to go on lockdown.

DFCS highlights need for Elbert foster homes

The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), specifically the Region 5 Adoption Division, which covers Elbert, Madison and Oglethorpe counties, is looking for people who are willing to open their doors as foster homes. As of Jan.
The Elbert County Comprehensive High School Beta Club brought home first place in the state for the Living Literature competition during the Georgia State Beta Club Convention in Savannah Jan. 25 through Jan. 27. The club won for portraying a scene from the book “Pure Grit” and will compete nationally in June.

The Elbert County Board of Education took the first step in actively searching for a new superintendent after unanimously voting to advertise the position within the school district for 10 days beginning Monday.

The Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) appointed Teresa Barnett as board chair and Keith Harper as vice chair during their Jan. 10 work session, giving the BOE a new chairman for the first time in 16 years.

Rucker continues protecting and serving in new role

For nearly 30 years, Darin Rucker embodied the phrase ‘Protect and Serve’ as a member of the Elberton Police Department. In November 2022, Rucker was hired to lead in a new role as the Director of Transportation for the Elbert County School District.
