As Michael Dale Woodall, 46, was being booked into the Elbert County Detention Center in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 22, he thought he would be detained for maybe a couple of days.

After testing for COVID-19 on May 1, Elberton’s Police Department revealed it had two positive cases of COVID-19.

Elberton Police Chief Mark Welsh said prior to the testing of his police department on May 1 he believed his department was “clean.”
But after undergoing testing, Welsh and the Elberton Police Department (EPD) found out that two of 25 members of the city police force tested positive for COVID-19.

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners (BOC) approved the county’s first T-SPLOST (Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) project since passing the necessary legislation in March 2019, totaling almost $915,000 to do resurfacing work on six county roads.

Early voting will begin Monday, May 18 for the combined Statewide General Primary and Presidential Preference Primary at the Historic Rock Gym. Voting will be held May 18 through June 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Saturday early voting will be held May 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
