DHP’s free COVID-19 testing ends this week

Patrick Reilly of the Northeast Health District of the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) said his staff is going to be moving his mobile testing unit to another location in the district’s 10-county region.

On a hot June morning with a brilliant blue sky beaming down on Lincoln Heights Cemetery, it is so easy to see all the little details of Tyshon Dye’s monument. There are so many to consider ... Tyshon’s smile sticks out, as does the big orange Tiger paw and the Blue Devil.

‘Grant’ or ‘loan?’

Although Elbert Memorial Hospital (EMH) has brought in almost $6.9 million in “advances, grants and loans”since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March, CEO Kerry Trapnell told the EMH Authority last week that in May the hospital lost in excess of $830,000.

Commission approves 2020-2021 budget

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners (BOC) approved an almost $22 million budget at a called meeting June 25 in front of a crowd of concerned members of the Elbert Memorial Hospital (EMH) community.

The Northeast (Georgia) Health District (NHD) in Athens has set up a mobile testing site in Elberton that will give free tests for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The free testing site for COVID-19  will be at the Elberton Civic Center at least through Friday, June 26.

EMA will halt tally of local COVID cases

Elbert County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Chuck Almond said Monday that the local EMA will cease compiling a cumulative count of COVID-19 cases in Elbert County.

Tax commission office reopening

The Elbert County Tax Commissioner's Office stayed closed Monday but opened Tuesday after shutting down for three days last week from a lack of office personnel partly because Elbert County Tax Commissioner Lorrie Higginbotham tested positive for COVID-19.

Damaged water lines are up and running again in Bowman

The City of Bowman’s water system is back up and running after two water lines and a gas line were hit by contractors June 18, causing the city’s water system to shut down and placing city residents under a water boil advisory for at least 24 hours after it was back on.

Senior Superior Court Judge David Sweat told attorneys representing Sweet City Landfill and Elbert County he wants them “working together” over the next 30 days to “narrow things down” in the landfill’s suit against the county.
