General Assembly begins new legislative term

A Twilight Stroll through the Granite Bowl

The 21st annual Twilight Stroll by the Granite Bowl was held Jan. 5 on the streets of downtown Elberton and culminated with a run around the field inside the Granite Bowl. There were 107 registered participants.

Council approves funding for commercial spaces

Renovation of the two commercial spaces in the former “Bailey Buidling” on the downtown square will continue after the Elberton City Council unanimously approved an application from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) to complete the renovations during Monday night’s meeting.

Winery gets green light for extra operating hour

With close to 70 people in attendance, Monday night’s meeting of the Elbert County Board of Commissioners was standing room only as the board unanimously approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance that allows an extra operating hour for farm wineries.  The amendment, to Chapter 7.

State income tax cut in effect

By Dave Williams Bureau Chief, Capitol Beat News Service   A $1 billion election-year tax cut the Republican-controlled General Assembly passed in 2022 took effect on New Year’s Day. For now, the phased-in tax cut sets the state income tax rate for 2024 at a flat 5.
