Traffic stop leads to drug bust by Elbert County Sheriff’s Office

A traffic stop on Athens Highway led to a drug bust of 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine, laced with fentanyl, and two arrests by the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Feb. 24. Chief Deputy Darren Scarborough and Lt. Jorge Hernandez said the traffic stop was conducted by Sgt. Noah Hart between 8 p.m.

Weapon detectors to be in use after winter break

Students will pass through weapons detection systems as they enter the doors of Elbert County Comprehensive High School (ECCHS) and Elbert County Middle School (ECMS) when returning from winter break Feb. 26 as Superintendent Robert Wheeler announced Feb.

Casting a vote and striking a pose

Early voting in the Presidential Preference Primary began Monday in the Historic Rock Gym. Voting will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day through Friday, March 8. A pair of Saturday votes will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

County to move forward on new 4-H building

A new 4-H building for the Elbert County 4-H/Extension Office is finally set to be built after the Elbert County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 to build the new building Feb. 12. While plans to build a new building were previously discussed and $2.

City’s capital projects, downtown revamp moving forward

Capital projects around the City of Elberton are continuing to make progress, including the project to revamp several aspects of Elberton’s downtown square, City Manager Lanier Dunn announced during the City of Elberton’s Feb. 5 regular meeting.

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 during Monday night's meeting to deny a conditional use permit request from Hester Hill Solar,  "a wholly-owned subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources," for a 900 acre solar facility off of Lincolnton Highway.
