Planning and zoning chairman resigns

Elbert County Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Cosby “Butch” Smith has resigned, effective Nov. 9, after the Elbert County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning request on Cleveland Drive Nov. 8 that the zoning board unanimously recommended the commissioners deny.

EMH hires architect for master planning

The Elbert Memorial Hospital (EMH) Authority Board took the next step in Phase 2 of its contract with Innovative Capital by voting 8-1, with member Mike Webb voting opposed, to hire an architect to make a master plan assessment during last week’s regular meeting.

Community mourns loss of ‘Mr. Blue Devil’

Danny Wendell Bessinger, an Elbert County native and icon, belovedly known as “Pop” to his family and extend- ed family, and “Mr. Blue Devil” to many in Blue Devil nation, died Friday, Oct. 29. He was 71 years old.

The Elberton Star Publisher Gary Scott Jones, 64, passed away Monday at Augusta University Medical Center.  Jones suffered from a medical emergency Friday night after covering the Elbert County Blue Devils’ football game against Riverside Military Academy in the Granite Bowl.

Commissioners may ‘shift’ districts

Bowman gets $1 million loan from GEFA

The City of Bowman officially entered into an agreement with the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) for a $1 million loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) that could see forgiveness of over half the loan according to City Attorney Richard Campbell.

Jasper man dies in hunting accident

Preliminary investigations of a death on Highway 172 West in Bowman on Sunday, Oct. 10 indicate a Jasper man may have died as the result of an accidental discharge of a muzzleloader, according to Elbert County Emergency Services (EMS) Director and Coroner Chuck Almond.
