Road repair due to rainfall may take until end of year

Work to fix the roads damaged from the torrential rainfall the county experienced almost two weeks ago is looking like it could take until the end of the year, or longer depending on weather and materials, to complete, according to county road department manager Kris Williams.

Andrews cancels contract

Elbert County School Superintendent Jon Jarvis said he received notification Monday afternoon that Elbert County Sheriff Melvin Andrews was canceling the intergovernmental agreement between his office and the school system in which the sheriff provides school resource officers (SRO).

Elbert County Chief Financial Officer and future County Administrator Phil Pitts told the Elbert County Board of Commissioners (BOC) at the Oct. 7 work session that if the BOC does not restore at least $34,570 to the Elbert County Health Department budget, it may be forced to close.

Early vote has begun

Early voting for the City of Elberton and City of Bowman Nov. 2 general elections started Tuesday and candidates from both races took part in The Elberton Star and 105.3 WSGC’s co-sponsored forum at the Elbert County Government Complex Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Elbert County native Jason Tasi, pictured above, died unexpectedly almost one year ago. His life and artwork will be honored through an art exhibit hosted at the Elberton Arts Center Saturday, Oct. 16. The art show is free and open to the public. Art show will honor artist Jason Tasi

Saturday evening at the Elberton Arts Center will be a memorial tribute to Jason Amani Tasi, belovedly known as “Tasi,” a former Elbert County native and owner of Tasi Tattoo in Royston. Tasi, who would’ve turned 43 Oct. 12, passed away unexpectedly Oct.

The Elberton Star and WSGC Radio will be holding a forum for candidates in the upcoming mayor and city council races in both Elberton and Bowman on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Because of COVID issues, there will be no live audience but the forum will be carried live on WSGC (105.
