Commissioners OK Guidestones curfew

A curfew is now set for Elbert County’s most popular tourist attraction after the Board of Commissioners (BOC) voted unanimously to impose an 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew for the Georgia Guidestones to help curb acts of vandalism at Monday night’s meeting.

Guest won’t seek re-election

Mayor Larry Guest announced last week he will not seek another term. When his term expires on Jan. 3 of next year, Guest will have served for 16 years, the most time serving as mayor in the 217-year history of Elberton.

City budget ‘mixed bag’

The Elberton City Council is expected to approve the City of Elberton’s over $36.6 million budget for the upcoming 2022 fiscal year, at a 1.6 percent decrease from the current year’s 2021 fiscal year budget, which was a 2.6 percent increase from the previous 2020 fiscal year.

Elberton Federal, Oconee bank merging

Elberton Federal Savings and Loan, which has operated in Elberton for nearly 100 years, will be merging with and will be known as Oconee State Bank in the future. A news release was issued announcing the merger Tuesday, June 1.

Assessors office announces a revaluation

Citing a review of sales “as much as 15 percent” compared to 2020, the Elbert County Assessors Office said in a release Monday it feels “compelled” to perform a revaluation for 2021 to reflect the increase.

Slowing process

Elbert Memorial Hospital Authority members slowed down the process of investigating the feasibility of building a new facility last week.

Talking (the country of) Turkey

They may have been slowed down by a global pandemic, but their desire to continue to travel the globe has not slowed down at all. Most were complete strangers prior to a guided tour of Turkey in September of 2019.
