Graves to run for mayor

Daniel Graves, who has been at the helm of Elbert Memorial Hospital’s governing body for the better part of the last decade, announced to the hospital authority last week that he would be resigning from his position in August to devote his full time to running for the mayor’s seat in Elberton.

Revaluation frustration

With uncertainties surrounding the projected revenue of the tax digest, the Elbert County Board of Commissioners (BOC) was scheduled to vote Wednesday in a called meeting to continue the 2021 fiscal year budget until the 2022 fiscal year budget can be adopted.

Bowman council approves city employee pay raise

Employees in Bowman will receive a five percent “cost of living” pay increase beginning Thursday, July 1 after the three members remaining on the Bowman City Council voted unanimously to approve the raises at Monday night’s meeting.

Two capitol breach arrests

An Elberton woman is one of the latest from Georgia to be arrested on charges pertaining to the Jan. 6 breach of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

BOE approves ‘21-‘22 budget

The Elbert County Board of Education unanimously approved a $44,398,328 overall school budget that includes a general fund budget of $31,359,412 Monday night. The board approved the budget after three budget hearings leading up to Monday night’s final budget approval.

Granite ‘feather’ will be displayed

On the Athens Highway you’ve probably noticed the 14-foot-6 granite “feather” located on the old Supreme Granite (now Pyramid) quarry.
College Avenue, the main artery through Elberton on the west side of town, was closed to all traffic during most of the morning on Wednesday, June 16. Authorities still aren’t sure why the reinforced “ATM Response” van on the left crossed from the eastbound lanes of College Avenue turning lane,  through the turning lane and into the westbound side. Vaccine campaign to begin

Two months prior to a new school year starting and well before the cool weather in the fall, The Medical Center of Elberton and Elbert County Emergency Services will be making a concentrated effort to vaccinate as many Elbert County citizens as possible.

Rider new principal at ECCHS

The Elbert County Board of Education approved Josh Rider as Elbert County Comprehensive High School Principal Monday night at a board work session in the middle school auditorium. Rider replaces Jason Kouns, who submitted his resignation last month.

Spillway gates at Russell Dam will be tested June 23

All 10 of Richard B. Russell Dam’s spillway gates will be opened on Wednesday, June 23, Operations Project Manager Keith Crowe told The Elberton Star Monday. Crowe stopped short of saying all 10 gates may be opened at the same time. “That has yet to be determined,” Crowe said.
