Campbell resigns as Bowman attorney

Richard Campbell has resigned as the City of Bowman’s attorney.  His letter, addressed to Mayor Roberta Rice and the Bowman City Council members, was sent by email and first class mail on June 6.

Juneteenth celebration, FHF Football Fun Day taking place Saturday

Juneteenth – A Freedom Celebration, hosted by the Jim-Ree African American Museum, will take place on the downtown square from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 17.

Single vehicle accident claims life of Dewy Rose man Sunday in Bowman

A single vehicle accident in Bowman on the morning of June 11 claimed the life of a Dewy Rose man and left a portion of a building in pieces.  According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), at around 8:30 a.m.

City approves budget, discusses unused property, housing

The Elberton City Council unanimously approved a nearly $39 million 2024 fiscal year (FY) budget during the city’s June 8 budget hearing after a presentation from City Manager Lanier Dunn.  The approved FY 2024 budget totals $38,912,508 and is a 1.2 percent increase of $480,245 from FY 2023.
Elbert County native Carly Armour (right) was selected out of 400 doctoral graduates to give remarks during the Graduate Doctoral Commencement Ceremony at the University of Iowa May 12. Armour was also honored just days before her graduation with the University of Iowa Center for Inclusive Academic Excellence Dean’s Achievement Award by the Graduate College and the College of Education. Armour selected to address fellow graduates during Iowa commencement

Elbert County native Carly Armour was selected to give remarks to her fellow graduates during the University of Iowa’s Graduate Doctoral Commencement Ceremony May 12 in Iowa City, Iowa.  Armour was selected out of 400 doctoral graduates to give the speech during the ceremony.
In honor of Elbert County Comprehensive High School (ECCHS) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Senior Army Instructor Maj. Ed Lovin’s retirement after 18 years at the helm of the program, the rappel tower at ECCHS was dubbed “The Lovin Tower” in a May 25 dedication ceremony. ECCHS senior Broughton Smith came up with the idea and brought it to the Matthews Granite team, who donated a granite marker to be placed by the tower.

Maj. Lovin retires after 42 years of service to country, Elbert County

After a long and distinguished 42-year career between the United States Army and Elbert County Comprehensive High School’s (ECCHS) junior reserve officer training corps (JROTC) program, Maj. Ed Lovin will transition into a life of retirement – again.
The Elbert County Comprehensive High School junior reserve officer training corps (JROTC) hosted their annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge summer camp May 30 to June 2. Cadets received an opportunity to fly in a UH-60 Blackhawk from an Army National Guard unit based out of Winder. The camp included a variety of topics and skills, taking place at the Elbert County airport, ECCHS and Richard B. Russell State Park. (Photos by Wells)
