County holding millage rate hearings Thursday

Search warrant executed on Welcome Church Road

A search warrant was executed by federal agencies on Welcome Church Road Aug. 23, the United States District Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado confirmed Monday. The office declined to comment on any other details surrounding the search.

Contested races set for Nov. 7 municipal elections

The City of Elberton and City of Bowman will see contested races for the upcoming Nov. 7 municipal election following the end of qualifying Aug. 23. Elberton City Council incumbent Troy Colquitt will face newcomer Kendra L. Jones for the seat to represent Ward 3.

County increasing property taxes

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners is proposing to increase property taxes for the coming year by “24.21 percent for the unincorporated district and 28.04 percent for the incorporated district over the rollback millage rate,” according to the property tax increase notice.

Board of Education approves millage rate, tax increase

The Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) unanimously approved a millage rate of 14 mills, resulting in a property tax increase, during their Aug. 15 work session. The new millage rate is above the full rollback rate of 11.642 mills, which results in “an increase in property taxes by 20.

‘Artifice’ takes the stage this weekend

Encore Productions’ third show of the 2023 season, “Artifice,” will debut on The Elbert Theatre stage Friday, Aug. 25 through Sunday, Aug. 27. The farce, written by Anne Flanagan, will continue with a second weekend Friday, Sept. 1 through Sunday, Sept. 3.

State Champs receive rings

The Elbert County Board of Education recognized the state champion Elbert County Comprehensive High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Female Armed Squad and the cadets were presented with their state championship rings by Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Ulrich during Monday night’s meeting.
