Pair seeks District 33 House seat

Two candidates from two counties with the most population – and voters – in the Georgia House of Representatives District 33 announced Monday they would be running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Tom McCall after 2020.

Boyd, regional developer for UNCF, will be MLK speaker

Justine Norman Boyd, Regional Development Director for the Atlanta Regional of the United Negro College Fund, will be the guest speaker at the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical Banquet Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Historic Rock Gym. The gym is located at 45 Forest Avenue.

Elberton council members sworn in

The mayor and council of the City of Elberton held the last meeting of the 2019 year Monday night, wishing Bobby G. Hunt a farewell after his 23 years serving Ward 2 on the council and welcoming Terry Burton to fill his seat.

First year goals

A “Rural Renaissance” presentation made by incoming Developing Authority President Daniel Dobbins to the Development Authority of Elbert County, Elberton and Bowman impressed Development Chairman Greg Gunter. Dobbins, who has been hired by the authority and will assume his position on Jan.

Students of the Month named for December

Elbert County Comprehensive High School recently named its Students of the Month for December 2019. Madelyn Dias was recognized by the science department.

Lunsfords ‘light up’ for Christmas season

Christmas in Elbert County has been continuously getting brighter over the past three years as Christmas on Lunsford Farm has been growing its display of lights.
Anthony Shoals Preservation Group, a watchdog group organized to keep an eye on operations at Broad River Valley Farms (above) on River Road, kept a watchful eye on the actions of the Oglethorpe County Commissioners, who attempted to stop soil amendment applications on farms in Oglethorpe County. Those actions were struck down by Senior Superior Court Judge David Sweat in a court order issued in Oglethorpe County on Dec. 7. (Photo by Jones)
