Daniel wins prestigious Athena Award

Athens Techincal College (ATC) President Dr. Andrea Daniel was presented the ATHENA Leadership Award from the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce at the chamber’s annual meeting in Athens on Feb. 3.

There may be a simple reason why LHR Farms, which lost its fertilizer license last June for applying what the Georgia Department of Agriculture (DOA) considered an “adulterated” fertilizer at Broad River Valley Farms (BRVF), didn’t bother to apply to get its license back.

ECCHS, ECMS compete at state conventions

Students from Elbert County Middle School and Elbert County Comprehensive High School, led by advisors Angela Scoggins, Amber Trotter and Shanda Rorick, traveled to Savannah in December and January in order to compete on the state level at the annual BETA Club convention.

A proposed consent order has been posted on the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s (EPD) website for a comment period of a month in regard to a company that operates at Broad River Valley Farms on River Road. The Jan.
Elbert County firefighters and Sheriff’s Office deputies found this 1,320-square-foot structure “flattened and still burning” Thursday morning at 3:15 a.m., according to a news release issued by Sheriff Melvin Andrews. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Public Information Officer Tommy Crosby said the owner of the home on Craft Road was ‘associated’ with a February 2019 murder of a paramedic in Anderson, South Carolina.

Craft Road explosion ruled ‘arson’

An explosive house fire at 1697 Craft Road that took place in the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 23 has been ruled arson in the first degree and the owner of the home has been “associated” with a murder that took place in Anderson, South Carolina last year.
