Five employees at Elbert Memorial Hospital are retiring

(EMH) held a special event recently to honor five employees who are retiring. They are: • Bea Wallace, who works in the lab and is retiring after 46 years. Bea started working at EMH when she was 18 running the switchboard. She left for a while to raise her children.

Paving projects start this month

City Manager Lanier Dunn announced at Monday’s regular meeting of the Elberton City Council that paving projects for over 321,000 square feet of city roads are scheduled to begin this month and last throughout the rest of October.

The Elberton Star and WSGC Radio co-sponsored a forum at the Elbert County Government Complex Oct. 1 for candidates running for the District 33 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) District 4 seat and Elbert County Sheriff.

Former Elberton City Council member Bobby Hunt, representing the Concerned Citizens of Elbert County, asked the school board to keep Blackwell School open in its upcoming renovation plans. The BOE, meeting in a work session Monday night, is planning to spend between $8.7 and $13.

Deputy injured in shooting

An officer-involved shooting on Rehoboth Road in Bowman in the early morning hours of Sept. 30 is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and resulted in an officer-to-officer injury and an arrest.

Another resignation

Another seat on the Bowman City Council is vacant after council member Wade Bridges announced he would be resigning from his position at Monday night’s council meeting. Bridges cited health issues within his family as his reasoning for resigning from the term that expires Dec. 31, 2021.

A new homecoming queen will be crowned Friday, Oct. 9 during halftime of the Elbert County-Lincoln County football game in the Historic Granite Bowl. The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Once Upon a Homecoming.

For the first time since 2014, the millage rate for Elbert County will include no funding for Elbert Memorial Hospital (EMH) after the Elbert County Board of Commissioners (BOC) failed to make a motion to “give millage support for the hospital” at a called meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
