Budget delays continue

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners voted to table advertising the 2023 fiscal year budget for a second time during a five-minute called meeting Wednesday, Aug. 17 after citing that they had not had time to review the amended budget.

Bowman approves rezone requests

After a nearly hour-long public hearing that brought concerns from local citizens, a trio of rezone requests for property in the Bowman city limits was approved, with one being amended, during the Bowman City Council’s regular meeting Monday night.

BOE rolls back rate

By Mark Wells mwells@elberton.com   The Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) voted during a called meeting Aug. 19 to approve a .022 rollback for the 2023 millage rate. The new rate is down to 14.228 from the 14.250 rate that was set for 2022.

Farm-fresh goods come to Main Street

Before the sun rises each Wednesday morning, Mary Jean Smith drives to the downtown square, unloads her tables from her truck and sets up a variety of fresh flower bouquets, canned goods, homegrown vegetables and embroidered pillow cases.

Detention center officer arrested after shooting

An Elbert County Detention Center officer was arrested Monday afternoon after a shooting incident occurred early Sunday morning at a Mineral Springs Road apartment complex. Willgwenda McIntosh, 29, of 30 Oak St. was arrested by the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Aug.

Softball, baseball fields to flood with new illumination

By Mark Wells mwells@elberton.com   New and improved lighting is coming to the Elbert County Comprehensive High School baseball and softball fields at a cost of nearly $400,000 after the Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) voted to approve the expenditure during Monday night’s meeting.

Holocaust exhibit on display at library

In partnership with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, Georgia Public Library Service is proud to announce a tour of banner exhibits in public libraries statewide to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and to promote public understanding of the history.
