High school sports schedules pack summer

With the two-week dead period for GHSA sports coming to an end Sunday, Elbert County teams are already getting to work with a busy summer schedule.    Football   The Devils closed out spring practice May 18 with the annual Blue/White game in the Granite Bowl.
Senior Brady Starrett finished the tournament in second place in individual standings. The tournament was the first state championship event ever hosted in Elbert County.

The Elbert County Blue Devils fishing team’s pairing of Ethan Vaughn and Adrian Harris and boat captain Brad Vaughn finished 29th in the state out of 106 teams at the GHSA Fishing State Finals held at Clarks Hill Lake May 20.

The first ever state championship event hosted in Elbert County began Monday as the Lady Devil and Devil golf teams were in full swing off in the GHSA Single A Division 1 State Championship tournament Monday.
Senior Marika Glaze was crowned the state champion in discuss during the GHSA A Division 1 State Championship May 11 through May 13 in Rome.

Marika Glaze won the state championship by throwing the discus a total of 121 feet, 8 inches – over 10 feet longer than the second place winner and over 14 feet longer than the third and fourth place winners.

Elbert County senior Marika Glaze won an individual state championship in discus after setting a new personal best and beating the next closest competitor by over 10 feet at the 2023 GHSA State Championship meet in Rome May 11 through May 13.
