Roberta Rice will be Bowman’s mayor once again after she was the only person to qualify for the seat last week.  Rice, who was appointed mayor pro tem at a called meeting on Jan. 2, turned in her resignation letter at the end of a called meeting Jan.

The 27th annual ecumenical banquet celebrating the birthday and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was held Jan. 18 with Justine Norman Boyd, regional development director of the Atlanta region of UNCF, as the keynote speaker.

EMH Foundation gives a $500,000 gift to hospital

The Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation made a donation of $500,000 to the hospital to assist with the hospital’s current needs,  according to EMH Foundation Chair Leanne Layne. A $500,000 check was presented to CEO Kerry Trapnell at last week’s meeting of the Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation.

County requires state permits and licensing for electrical, plumbing

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners had a first reading of changes to the county’s code of ordinances concerning building regulations and construction standards at Monday night’s meeting. Changes to the ordinances include adopting state standards on licensing and requirements for permits.

‘Special’ Bowman election

In a called meeting Thursday, the Bowman City Council approved former mayor and recently sworn in council member Roberta Rice as mayor pro tem. The action, according to Bowman City Attorney Richard Campbell, makes Rice an ‘acting’ mayor.

Mayoral merry-go-round in Bowman is continuing

Once upon a time – that time being from the late 1970s until the late 1990s – one of the most stable government positions in the county was the mayoral post in Bowman held by the late L.B. Berryman. Berryman held the mayor’s post from the late 1970s until the late 1990s before he decided to retire.
