Devils overwhelm Tigers in scrimmage

Elbert County got its first taste of football season last Friday when the Blue Devils beat Washington-Wilkes 55-20 in a preseason scrimmage at the Granite Bowl.

Elberton city manager gives update on splash park, projects

The Elberton city council gave an update on the splash park project at its regular meeting on Monday. City manager Kevin Eavenson said that the city is “nearing the finish line” of completing the splash park and that the final interior and exterior painting had been finished.

Pamela Hughes, a citizen of Elberton, brought forth a complaint about the Elberton Police Department (EPD) during the Elberton City Council’s Aug. 4 regular meeting.

Elbert County Athletics moving to digital tickets

Paper tickets are a thing of the past at Elbert County Comprehensive High School  (ECCHS) and Elbert County Middle School (ECMS) sporting events as ECCHS Athletic Director Jeannie Jourolmon announced Monday that Elbert County Athletics will only be accepting digital tickets for the upcoming season.

Cruisin' on the square

Main Street Elberton hosted its annual Cruise-In and Classic Car Show July 19 on the downtown square. The event included a wide variety of classic cars on display, food, fun, games and more. Tommy Landrum was on-site and kept the spirits high with oldies tunes while food trucks kept bellies full.
Wesley Phelps (No. 24) and Sid Smith (No. 18) were both members of McFerrin’s 1995 State Championship team. The Blue Devils posted a 14-1 record and avenged their only loss of the season against Washington-Wilkes by defeating the Tigers 27-0 to win Elbert County’s first football state championship.

Former players remember Coach McFerrin

By Bo Underwood bunderwood@elberton.com   T. McFerrin, in his modest stature, had the presence of a giant. The legendary high school football coach, who passed away July 1 at the age of 83, coached for 34 years in Georgia and amassed a 317-84-4 record, the ninth most wins in the state’s history.

BOC to approve new budget Monday

The Elbert County Board of Commissioners are slated to approve their FY26 budget during a June 30 called meeting at the Elbert County Government Complex.  The budget that is set for approval totals $33,184,800 across all funds, which is an increase of $306,585 over FY25.
