Sister City program now accepting 2026 applications

The Elberton / Mure-cho Sister City Student Exchange Program is accepting applications for the upcoming summer. The dates for this year's program are July 8 through July 21. A total of five students and one chaperone will be selected for the exchange.

Maxwell, Gero return to challenge for Bowman seat

The two candidates vying for an open seat on the Bowman City Council have officially been named as Betty Jo Maxwell and Deborah Gero met the Jan. 30 qualifying deadline. The election is scheduled for March 17. More details will be released as they become available.

Second round of winter weather blankets Elbert County in snow

Just one week from a winter storm coming through Elbert County that resulted in mass closures throughout the community, another round of wintry weather came through town and covered the ground with multiple inches of snow.

The news director of WSGC radio and former managing editor of The Elberton Star, Mark Berryman passed away Monday night, WSGC announced on Facebook. Berryman served two stints at The Elberton Star, first working as a reporter before returning and serving as managing editor.

Qualifying fees, dates set for Elbert County BOC, BOE seats

Qualifying fees and dates have been set for this year's county elections. This year is slated to see several seats up for reelection as the board of commissioners (BOC) will see elections for the chairman position as well as District 2, District 4 and District 5.

Elbert County hit with closures after winter storm

Elbert County found itself in the path of a chilling winter storm over the weekend that resulted in mass closures throughout the community.

EMH Casino Night this weekend

Elbert Memorial Hospital is hosting its fifth annual Casino Night this weekend, with proceeds benefitting the Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation. The event is scheduled for Jan. 31 in the historic Rock Gym from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Mat Devils ready for traditionals

With dual season officially in the rearview mirrow, the Elbert County Mat Devils are turning their attention to traditional season with the Area 8A Traditional tournament scheduled for Jan. 30 in Commerce. The Devils capped off dual season on a high note Jan. 17, finishing second in the state.

Lady Devils run out of steam against Athens Academy

The Elbert County girls’ basketball team came up short against Athens Academy at home Friday, dropping a region matchup 62-55 to the 16-2 Lady Spartans. The Lady Devils are now 12-6 overall including a 3-4 mark in region play.

Blue Devils pick up home win over Athens Academy

The Elbert County boys’ basketball team pulled out a thrilling 58-55 home victory over Athens Academy in front of its home Inferno crowd Friday night. The win brings the Blue Devils to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in the region while Athens is now 13-6 and 2-4 in region play. Senior A.J.
