A surprise presentation was made Friday, April 28 during the annual Friends Helping Friends basketball game at Elbert County Comprehensive High School that honored former Blue Devil Mecole Hardman Jr. by retiring his jersey.

A total of 12 Elbert County Blue Devils and Lady Devils across seven different events secured region championships from the Region 8A Division 1 Championship Meet hosted by Elbert April 25 and 26.

A pair of Elbert County freshman were recognized with player of the year honors in their respective all-region awards last week after the all-region teams were announced for both baseball and soccer.

Another Top 10 matchup is in the cards for the No. 4 Elbert County Diamond Devils as they are set to face No. 7 Social Circle May 4 in the second round of the GHSA state playoffs after a two-game sweep of Trion in the first round. “It’s going to be a David and Goliath type deal.

Diamond Devils begin playoffs Thursday

Playoff baseball is set to get underway this week as the No. 1 seed Elbert County Diamond Devils are scheduled to face the No. 4 seed Trion Bulldogs at home for the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs April 27.
Pictured prior to the Lady Devils’ match against Darlington are (front row, L-R) Gracie Kidd, Katie Nguyen, Lizett Nava and Jude Sanders and (back row, L-R) Myla Warwick, Audrey Poon, Emily Poon and Dessie Lee Santiago. The Elbert County Lady Devils fell 3-0 in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs to Darlington from Rome. The Lady Devils finished the regular season with a 5-4 overall record and a 3-2 record in Region 8A Division 1.

Tennis season officially came to a close in Elbert County after the Lady Devils were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Darlington in Rome April 19. “I honestly think they’ll probably end up being the semi final for our end of the bracket.

Fleming receives national Character and Leadership All-American Award

Junior wrestler Carter Fleming was recognized as one of the 1,076 winners across the country of the 2023 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/United States Marine Corps (USMC) Character and Leadership All-American Award March 17.
