The Elbert County basketball team earned perhaps its biggest win of the season Friday night with an 85-83 overtime victory over Commerce. The Blue Devils handed the Tigers their first region loss of the 2025-26 season.

A total of 11 Elbert County wrestlers are officially moving on to the Georgia Class A state tournament. The Mat Devils finished third out of 39 teams at the Class A Section A tournament last Saturday at Commerce High School.

Pre-K registration scheduled for March 11 and 12

Paul J. Blackwell Learning Center is hosting a Pre-K Registration Kick Off March 11 and 12.
The event is scheduled to be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days at Paul J. Blackwell Learning Center.
Children who are four years old by Sept. 1 are eligible to register.

Blackmon, Floyd win area titles for Mat Devils

Two Elbert County wrestlers are area champions, with senior Lincoln Blackmon and junior Cruz Floyd winning titles at the AAAAAAA area traditionals at Commerce High School Jan 30.
Blackmon wrestled at 215 lbs and Floyd at 113.
The wrestling team took the runner-up spot overall.

Redemption is a sweet thing, and that’s what the Elbert County Middle School girls’ seventh grade basketball team earned last Thursday when they beat Habersham County 41-23 in the NEGIAA championship.

Veterans of Foreign Wars to hold grand opening of Morale Welfare and Recreation Center

Pulliam-Burton VFW Post 5456 is scheduled to hold a grand opening for the new Morale Welfare and Recreation Center in conjunction with their 80th anniversary celebration.
The event has been named the “Winter Wonderland Valentine Dinner Dance” and is scheduled for Feb. 14.

Sister City program now accepting 2026 applications

The Elberton / Mure-cho Sister City Student Exchange Program is accepting applications for the upcoming summer.
The dates for this year's program are July 8 through July 21.
A total of five students and one chaperone will be selected for the exchange.

Qualifying fees, dates set for Elbert County BOC, BOE seats

Qualifying fees and dates have been set for this year's county elections.
This year is slated to see several seats up for reelection as the board of commissioners (BOC) will see elections for the chairman position as well as District 2, District 4 and District 5.
