Tuesday's May 24 Primary Election saw a split in incumbent and newcomer wins for seats on the Elbert County Board of Commissioners as Casey Freeman defeated challenger Austin Williams for the District 2 seat and newcomer Mike Scoggins swept incumbent Kenneth Ashworth for the District 4 seat.

In the District 2 race, Freeman received just 50 more votes than Austin Williams, claiming 489 total votes or 52.69 percent. Austin Williams received 439 votes or 47.31 percent.

Scoggins claimed the District 4 seat by an almost 11 percent margin after receiving 387 votes or 55.13 percent. Ashworth was unseated with 315 votes or 44.87 percent.

Hannah Williams will take over the District 2 seat on the Elbert County Board of Education (BOE) after receiving 703 votes or 78.29 percent. Challenger Tabitha Rambert ended the night with 195 votes or 21.71 percent.

Heather Nestor received 503 votes in the race for the BOE's District 3 seat but claimed the seat a week before the May 24 when incumbent Samantha Rucker withdrew her candidacy from the election due to health reasons.

For the gubernatorial race, incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp majorly swept the other candidates with 73.69 percent of the vote. Former President Donald Trump-endorsed candidate David Perdue took just 21.80 percent of the vote.

Kemp will once again face Democrat candidate Stacey Abrams in the Nov. 8 General Election four years after the two originally vied for the seat.
