Rose Scoggins has been named editor of The Elberton Star.
Northeast Georgia Regional Publisher Jeffery M. Peyton announced the promotion Nov. 19.
“Rose has been a vital part of The Elberton Star from day one,” Peyton said. “I am confident that she will continue to serve this community with the same excellence and attention to detail that she brings to everything she does.
“Gary Jones wanted this for Rose, but sadly, didn’t have the opportunity to make the announcement himself,” Peyton added. “I know he would be proud.”
Scoggins has been with The Elberton Star since July 2019 as reporter and media editor, covering Elbert County government, sports and local events.
Scoggins recently won first place in the photo portfolio division in the Georgia Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest (BNC) and was awarded second place in the multimedia category in the 2019 BNC.
Before joining The Star, Scoggins was a frequent contributor to Community Newspapers Inc. papers The Hartwell Sun and the Franklin County Citizen Leader.
An Elbert County native, Scoggins grew up in Bowman and moved to Royston in 2011 when her father, Shane, was named publisher of the Franklin County Citizen Leader.
While in college, Scoggins served as the news editor of Mercer University’s student newspaper, The Cluster. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelors degree in journalism from the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication in December 2020.
“I am honored, thrilled and thankful to be promoted to editor of The Elberton Star,” Scoggins said. “This paper and the Elbert County community are important to me and I’m excited for the opportunity to move back and become more involved in the community. I wouldn’t be here today if Gary Jones didn’t believe in me and allow me to learn from him while in college. I am forever thankful for him for giving me the opportunity.”
