Mayor Daniel Graves signed a proclamation Saturday, Feb. 24 recognizing March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month and March 1 as "Dress in Blue Day" in the City of Elberton.
According to the proclamation, which included statistics from the American Cancer Society, "the United States will see more than 152,810 new cases of colorectal cancer" in 2024, with men accounting for 81,540 of those cases and women accounting for 71,270 cases.
"Out of all cases for this year, it is estimated that there will be more than 53,010 deaths in 2024," according to the statistics listed. "The American Cancer Society states that colon cancer is now killing more youth than ever before. It is the first leading cause of cancer deaths amongst men younger than 50 and the second deadliest cancer for women in the same age group behind breast cancer. Colon cancer is preventable. Screenings should begin at age 45 or younger if you are African American or at high risk, and continue at regular intervals recommended by your healthcare provider."
Graves closed the proclamation by encouraging citizens "to ask their physician about this potentially livesaving screening."
The Elbert County Colon Cancer Awareness Group will celebrate “Dress in Blue Day” Friday, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the downtown square. Wear blue outfits to show support for colorectal cancer awareness. Prizes will be given for those who are best dressed. Information booths about prevention and early detection will be onsite. Registration for Downtown Dollars will also be available along with free treats.
