Work of art or city code infraction?

City says mural needs 'to be painted over'

While vacationing in Elberton, a Brazilian artist who was here to see the the total solar eclipse in August offered Myra Lara of 3 Reinas Restaurant on North McIntosh Street an offer she couldn’t refuse.

The artist, who was paid $200 for his effort, painted a mural on the side of the restaurant. Lara was happy with his work.

But on Sept. 15, Lara was surprised to get a letter from the City of Elberton Fire/Building Inspector Kevin Jordan.

The letter, dated Sept. 12, said that the mural was in violation of the city’s sign ordinance.
