Two arrested on home invasion charges
The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has reported the arrest of two subjects on home invasion charges who are believed to be a part of a group of gypsies known as the Irish Travelers. The group works out of North Augusta and are known to prey on the elderly.
On Tuesday, Feb. 16, an off-duty EMT’s actions led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be a part of the Irish Travelers. The alertness of the EMT led to the arrest of Anthony Riley, 62, and Jessica Riley, 31, both of a North Augusta, S.C. address.
Both were charged with burglary, two counts of misdemeanor theft by taking, two counts of elderly abuse/exploitation and criminal attempt to commit a felony.
The Irish Travelers have been approaching elderly people in their homes and distracting them by either asking them to show where the property line is or by attempting to sell the resident a rug from the back of a truck while an accomplice enters the residence. The ECSO is asking residents to be alert and report anything suspicious. They are also asking residents not to allow people they do not know in their homes.
