To the polls - Elbert County weighs in on E-SPLOST, presidential politics

Voters in Elbert County will go to the polls on Tuesday to select a candidate for president in the party of their choosing. Unlike a general election, those who participate in a primary vote must choose which party they prefer to cast their vote.

Voters who choose the Democratic ticket will choose between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Voters who choose the Republican ticket will choose between Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson and John Kasich.

Along with the presidential primary, a local issue will also appear on the ballot. Voters are asked to approve another round of ESPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax for education) tax to help fund the Elbert County School System. The new ESPLOST would continue to add one cent to local sales tax.

The current ESPLOST will conclude at the end of 2016 and if approved by voters, the new ESPLOST would begin in 2017 and run for five years.

The mandated Saturday vote was held on Feb. 20 with a total of 33 voters participating. To date a total of 465 Elbert County residents have voted early.

The last day for early voting will be Friday, Feb. 26.  Voters will then go to the polls on March 1 at their local precinct. All precincts will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Those who vote on March 1 must vote at the precinct where they are registered. Those voting in person should be prepared to show a valid photo identification.
