Local team fed thousands after Hurricane Florence's devastation
Elberton Salvation Army volunteers Mary Jo Dye and Haley Fortson were sent to Wilmington, North Carolina after pre-staging in Charlotte, North Carolina when Hurricane Florence made landfall.
According to Dye, the crew traveled in a caravan of 14-17 canteens from Charlotte to Wilmington. “We had to find a way to go and make a big loop west … the roads were flooded so bad,” she said. “We were the first group in … there was no power, traffic lights were out.”
Dye and Fortson, along with a spiritual support counselor, were told to find a place to set up in Wilmington.
