Hale says 'Books for Keeps' to distribute 14,556 kids' books
Executive Director Leslie Hale said her Books for Keeps organization will give 14,556 books to 1,213 Elbert County students this spring so those students will have books to read over the summer when the students aren’t in school. Since 2009 Books for Keeps has distributed 450,000 books to students in four Georgia counties.
The books are selected by the children based on the children’s interest.
The cost is covered by donations to Books for Keeps and an organization known as the Riverview Foundation, which provided $35,000 to the Elbert County school system last year. This year Riverview will contribute $30,000 to the local school system this year.
The Elbert County Community Partnership put $1,500 into the program and in March the organization will hold a “Bunco for Books” fundraiser in an effort to raise $5,000 toward the yearly book giveaway to children.
